    Notes:

Isaac was believed to have been born in Shenandoah Co., VA. (Previously Dunmore Co., VA.) as his father William was a land holder in the county. Isaac was possibly a resident of Knox Co., Tenn. in 1799 as he was noted as a Bondman for his sister Martha Patsy at the time of her marriage to Alexander
Foster. Isaac was a resident of White Co., Tenn. at the time of his death. His Will dated 27 Sept. 1835, proven in White Co., Tenn. Jan 11 1836 William and Phebe migrated from Dunmore (now Shenandoah Co.,) Virginia to Rickingham, Co., North Carolina about 1780. They were living in Burke, Co., North Carolina by 1790; in Greenville, Co., North Carolina by 1791 and migrated to Knox, Co.,Tennessee about 1794. Margaret has a stone in Blackjack Cemetery in Carroll Co., Ark. She is not buried there, her descendants placed a stone there in her memory, because she is buried on what is now private property and the owners would not allow at stone to be placed there. I do not know when this was done, or by whom.

    Notes:

Giles Penn son of William Penn, the law clerk of Malmesbury, and his wife Margaret Rastall, was born perhaps about 1573. Brigadier Hogg suggests that he may have been named for Giles, Lord Chandos who , in 1573, became lord of the manor of Minety. He was apprenticed as "Egidius Penne, filius Willinup.de Myntie... defunct," to the linen draper, John Horte of Bristol, and Juliane his wife, on 1 May 1593, a year after his grandfather's will was offered for probate. It was as "Gylles Penn draper," that he was admitted to the "Liberties" of Bristol on 3 April 1600 "because he was Prentice of Mr John Horte, Alderman, Deceased" (note 11) The following 5 November 1600 he married at St. Mary Redcliffe, Bristol, Joan Gilbeart (Gilbert), of a family originally from Yorkshire.

From draper Giles Penn progressed to Merchant with his younger brother William and by 1618 had been overtaken with financial losses. In 1630 records show that he was traveling between the Babary Coast, importing and selling assorted goods. Styled Captain Penn in 1631. he was in London in 1636, and the following year when he was appointed resident consul for Charles I at Sallee ( Sale Morocco), he was described as " a man well experienced in the language and custom of said country." He was deceased, probably overseas, by 1656, when a new consul was appointed at Sallee.

The apprenticeship and citizenship records sited in the text above are from NEHGR, 54, 326-327. For a more extended account of Giles Penn see Hogg, Furtheright, 27-31.

    Notes:

William Penn, son of William Penne of Minety and grandson of John Penne of the same place, was apprenticed as a law clerk to the counselor-at-law, Christopher George of Bawnton, near Cirencester, eventually becoming his chief clerk. He was married by 1570 to Margaret Rastall daughter of John Rastall Alderman of Gloucester and wife Anne George a sister to the above Christopher.

William and Margaret Penn apparently settled in Malmesbury four or five miles southwest of Minety. In the Malmesbury Subsidy Roll of 1570-71, 13 Elizabeth I, William was taxed six shillings on his movable goods and was taxed there again ten years later. According to Brigadier Hogg, he was not listed in the Subsidy Rolls for 1586-87, but in the Lay Subsidy Roll for Malmesbury borough in the Public Record Office is the entry for " William Penn goods iij li--iij d, as sited by Mr. Lea (note 7) It is apparent however, that William Penn was deceased by 1588, and that in 1590 his widow and six children were living with the Elder William Penne. PMHB, XIV, 291. This last entry is not cited by Brigadier Hogg.

William married Margaret Rastall 1570, Bristol, England, (Present UK). Margaret (daughter of John Rastall and Ann George) was born 1548, Bristol, Gloucester, England; died 1570, Bristol, Gloucestershire, England. [Group Sheet]
