Husband of Hannah Sigmon m. 17 Apr 1787 Lincoln Co, NC. The family was burned out by Cherokee Indians. In 1838, John, aged 76, was on his way alone to the Springs some fourteen miles distant from his home. His horse was found tied to a tree & his dead body in the woods nearby. John Wilfong was born Apr 8, 1762 & died 1838. He enlisted in the Whig army September 1, 1780 in McDowell's regiment under Capt. Sigman and LT. Van Horn. Marched to Morganton, then to Cane Creek in Burke, then to Watauga. Returned with Colonels Sevier, Campbell & Shelby to Cane Creek, thence to the Cowpens where they were joined by Colonoels Cleveland & Williams & Lincoln troops. Crossed Broad River & fought at Kings Mountain. The same day Ferguson was killed & his whole army caputred. Wilfong was wounded in the left arm & went home the next day, Octobert 8, 1780. He volunteered again in Jul 1781 for the next ten months with General Greene, & was in the Battle of Eutaw Springs, September 6, 1781. In March 1782, he marched to the Cherokee nation under Captain Jesse Johnson, then returned to Ge. Pickens in South Carolina, where he served the residue of his time.
