She died in Nottoway Co., Va. before Nov. 6, 1823 which is the date the County Court appointed William Verser as the Administrator of her estate. The court appointed Matthew Anderson, Thomas W. Dyson and A. Robertson as Appraisers of her estate. Their report is dated November 17, 1823. It is on file in Will Book 5, pg. 333.

She is listed as a non-resident of Virginia when a chancery suit was filed in 1826 in Prince Edward Co., Court seeking a division of the estates of her grandparents, John and Margaret Bradshaw

After her marriage she moved to St. Louis, Missouri with her husband. Order Book 21, pg. 500 she is stated as being a non-resident of Virginia in 1826.

Deed Book 22, pg. 24, Prince Edward Co., Va. lists Phoebe Papin of the county and city of St. Louis, Missouri. On April 18, 1838 she made a claim, which was handled by atty. John T. Rawlins, to her interest in a refunding bond of Williamson Dickinson, Administrator of the estates of John and Margaret Bradshaw.

Apparently her first husband, Mr. Logan, had died and she was now married to Mr. Papin.

Deed Book 8, pg. 176. This is proof that John and "Dicey" were the parents of William.

Notes:

He is listed as a non-resident of the state of Virginia in the chancery suit in Prince Edward Co., Va. for a division of the estates of his grandparents, John and Margaret Bradshaw, in 1826. In actuality he was living in Stafford Co., Va. where his plantation was right next to that of his brother, Harberson Bradshaw.

THIS INDENTURE made this 15th day of February in the year Eighteen hundred & twenty six Between Joel FANT of the County of Stafford and State of Virginia of the one part and Thomas JONES of the same of the other part; Witnesseth that Zachariah BRADSHAW stands equally bound with Joel FANT on an execution now in the hands of the Sheriff of Stafford County in favor of Elijah McINTEER although the debt is justly due from the said Joel FANT, and the said Joel FANT being willing to secure the said BRADSHAW as well in consideration of the sum of One dollar hath sold to the said Thomas JONES his heirs and assigns forever, the land in the County of Stafford on which the said Joel FANT resides, And is bounded by the lands of Enoch MASON, Wm. F. PHILIPS and others and is supposed to contain Eighty five acres; To have and to hold to him and the said Thomas JONES his heirs and assigns forever, but nevertheless Upon Trust, that if the said Zachariah BRADSHAW shall discharge the amount of the said Execution and said Joel FANT shall fail to pay the said Zachariah BRADSHAW the full amount which the said BRADSHAW shall have paid for him for the time of eleven months from the date hereof, with interest, then at the request of the said BRADSHAW it shall be lawful for Thomas JONES, having first advertised for two weeks in some newspaper printed in Fredericksburg, sell the said land on the premises at public auction and out of the proceeds first pay to the said BRADSHAW the full amount of the Debt with interest and all costs and the surplus, if any, to the said Joel FANT, and the said Thomas JONES shall faithfully perform the Trust reposed in him and in case the sale of the said land shall not become necessary, that in that case he shall reconvey the said land to the said Joel FANT or his heirs; In testimony of which the said Joel FANT & Thomas JONES have subscribed their names and affixed their seals.

He is recorded in the census for the years 1810, 1820, 1830 and 1840. In the 1830 census he is listed as owning 7 slaves.


Dr. Herbert C. Bradshaw, who was a descendant of Benjamin Bradshaw, an uncle of Zachariah Bradshaw of Nottoway Co., Va. told J. Douglas Bradshaw, author of "Ancestors and Descendants of John H. Bradshaw & Scythia Enfield Fritter of Stafford County, Virginia & Allied Families", "that he was of the opinion that Zachariah of Stafford Co. was one and the same as Zachariah Bradshaw of Nottoway Co."

ZACHARIAH BRADSHAW

As evidenced by the following document, apparently after 10 years the parties to the Chancery Suit filed still had not located the descendants of Jeremiah Bradshaw. There is no explanation for this except that they apparently didn't keep in touch with each other.
March 16, 1836, filed by one of the commissioners, John Foster:

Pursuant to the several decrees made in the case of Bradshaw vs. Bradshaw heirs, the commissioners have paid the several portions of each and all of the parties interested in the decree made in this cause, except the joint portion of ____ Edson and Polly, his wife, ____ Logan and Phoebe, his wife, Zachariah Bradshaw and Jane Bradshaw, heirs of Jeremiah Bradshaw, deceased. The said joint portion is $160.06 with interest from 18 Jan. 1828 till the 16th. Nov. 1830 at which time the money was rcd. by the commrs. and has been ready for them on application at all times since. Your commrs. do not know the parties, nor do they know where they live, but have been informed by Major Dickinson, Administrator of John Bradshaw, Snr., decd., that Zachariah and Jane Bradshaw is now dead, leaving no issue & the portion of the one that is dead will of course be reserved by the commrs. for the further disposition of the court.

Not only was there no contact between these branches of the family, but there were three, possibly four of Jeremiah's children that weren't even mentioned in the Bill in Chancery, Harberson, Henry who was more than likely a son, John, and William. (see notes for William Bradshaw)

Zachariah is listed in the 1807 Personal Property Tax List as paying a tax of .56 on one tithe, one horse and one male slave between 12 and 16 years old.
On the 1809 list he paid a tax of .12 on one tithe and one horse. The slave must have been sold. In 1810 his tax was the same.
In 1812 he paid a tax of .12 on one tithe and two horses.
The 1810 census for Stafford Co., Va. lists him as being 26-44 years old, 1 male under 10, 1 female 26-44, 1 female over 45, and having 2 slaves.
The 1820 census for the same county lists him as being 45 or more, 3 males under 10, 1 male 10-15, 1 female under 10, 1 female 26-44, having 2 slaves. He is listed as being in the house counted #700 and Harberson is listed as house #702.
The 1830 census for the same county lists him as being age 50-60, 1 male 10-15, 1 female 40-50, owning 7 slaves.
The 1840 census for the same county lists him as being age 60-70, 1 male 20-30, 1 female 30-40, owning 5 male slaves. By the time of this census his wife had died. This is the last census listing Zachariah.

February 26, 1839, Book LL, pg. 419- Deed of Trust to secure $326.62 for Ranson Hickerson. It was forclosed on April 13 and the property was sold to David S. Coakley at public auction for $760.00. This deed is recorded in Book MM, pg. 45.
March 1, 1839, Book LL, pg. 416- Deed from the Thomas Seddon Estate to Zachariah for 197.75 acres. This land is believed to be the land owned later by Charles Mason Bradshaw which was known as "Pleasant Hill".

Zachariah died sometime before the 1850 census. There are no probate records in Stafford for him. Apparantly, after he lost his farm to foreclosure he never bought another one.

The W.P.A., an agency of the government, was recording and cataloging the historically significant homes, churches and buildings in Stafford Co., Va. in the 1930's. "Pleasant Hill", also known as "Mount Pleasant", was one of those listed. The report is on pg. 274.

John H. Bradshaw was the first owner. Charles Bradshaw owned it for a number of years. Mr. C. E. Ramsey, present owner. (John H. Bradshaw could not have built this home as he was born in the same year the house was supposed to be built. It probably was built by Zachariah Bradshaw, his father.)
DESCRIPTION:
This house was probably given the name "Mount Pleasant" because of it's location. The main part of the original house is today used as a kitchen.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE:
When the northern soldiers came down the old Warrenton Road, which is Route #612 today, they camped on this farm and had to get out in the fields as the mud was so deep in places. The "Mud March", or the road which they came over, is directly in front of this house.

Zachariah was in the War of 1812 as a private in the 4th Regiment Virginia Militia under the command of Lt. Col. LUCAS, Maj. WILLS and Capt. Arthur SMITH'S Company of Infantry. He is on the muster rolls for August 1, 1812 through January 31, 1813. On his payroll papers he was paid $6.66 per month.

In the name of God Amen, I, Harberson BRADSHAW of the County of Stafford and the Commonwealth of Virginia, do make, constitute and appoint this my last will and testament in manner and form following to with: Item 1st, I give unto my five single Daughters viz: Eliza, Emily, Ann, Ellen and Frances during the time of their remaining single or for life provided they should not marry, the place where I now live, that is all my land this side of the ridge road and if there should not be a sufficiency of wood for the support of the place above mentioned my said Daughters above mentioned are to have free access to my land on the other side of the ridge road. Item 2nd, The remainder of my property after paying all my just debts and necessary expenses I wish to be equally divided among all my children. Item 3rd, I wish only son Uriah H. BRADSHAW to have the use of road through my land from the land he purchased from Joseph B. FICKLIN out to the ridge road and lastly I appoint my son Uriah H. BRADSHAW my Executor to this my last will and testament. This will was so vague that his son, Rodney B. BRADSHAW had to bring suit in Chancery Court to seek a partition of the 116 acres of land. (See notes for Rodney B. BRADSHAW)

From the book "They Called Stafford Home" by Jerrilynn Eby, 1997, pg. 293:

MOUNT PLEASANT--an old BRADSHAW family farm that was between Highland Home (a farm owned by the Lee family) and U. S. Rt. 1. The old house there was built c.1811. Mount Pleasant subdivision now occupies the land. This home was probably built by his father.

Harberson is not listed in the chancery suit as an heir of Jeremiah, however, there is evidence that he was a son:
1..In an interview by J. Douglas BRADSHAW with Harry Barksdale BRADSHAW, Harry said that he remembered his father, Charles Mason BRADSHAW, who was a son of Zachariah, remembered being visited occasionally by Rodney BRADSHAW, son of Harberson BRADSHAW, and Cumberland George BRADSHAW, son of Landon Carter BRADSHAW, and said that they always called each other "cousin".
2..They, Zachariah and Harberson, had farms adjoining each other in Stafford County, Va.
3..They are the only BRADSHAWS listed in the 1810 census for Stafford County, Va. where both are recorded as slave owners.
4..They are recorded as living near each other in the census' for the years 1820, 1830 and 1840 also.
5..Letter from Mr. J. Douglas BRADSHAW to Mr. Bolivar Nelson BRADSHAW, "My great-great grandparents were Zachariah and Elizabeth BRADSHAW. I believe that Zachariah and Harberson were brothers..."

There is a discrepancy concerning his date of birth. On his application for marriage in 1854 he says he is 40 years old which would make his date of birth 1814. J. Douglas Bradshaw, in his book, says his date of birth is 1811.

1840 Stafford Co., Va. census lists his household as: his age being 20-30 years, 1 female age 20-30 (probably his wife Ann), 1 female age 60-70 (probably his mother-in-law). No slaves are listed, but one free male colored person age 10-24 is listed as living in the household.

1850 Stafford Co., Va. census lists him as being 39 years old, his wife, Ann, age 28, and their daughter Virginia as age 12. He is listed as a farmer and his real estate is valued as $600.00.

1860 Stafford Co., Va. census lists his household as: his age as 46, his wife, Enfield, as age 28, his children as Alice age 4, Charles age 3, Virginia age 1, and Sarah age 6 a mulatto. His occupation is farmer and the value of his real estate is $3000.00. His personal property is valued at $600.00.

1870 Stafford Co., Va. census lists him as age 53, farmer, real estate value $2000.00 and personal property at $400.00. The family consisted of Alice age 13, Charles age 11, Fannie age 9, John age 8 and Lucy age 7. His wife had died.

1880 Stafford Co., Va. census lists the household as headed by Charles age 20 (John had died), Mary A. (Alice) age 29, Fannie F. age 24, John F. age 19 and Lucy age 16.

John H. Bradshaw died without a will and the administration of the estate was in the Stafford Co., Va. Court.

Uriah Hugh BRADSHAW owned a cooper shop (maker of flour barrels) in Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania Co., Virginia and employed 15 men.

In the name of God, Amen. I, U. H. BRADSHAW, of the Town of Fredericksburg in the County of Spottsylvania and the State of Virginia, being of sound mind and memory and considering the uncertainty of this frail and transitory life, do therefore, make, ordain, publish and declare this to be my Last Will and Testament. That is to say, First, after all my lawful debts are paid and discharged, the residue of my Estate, real and personal, I give, bequeath and dispose of as follows, to wit: To my beloved wife, the House and Ground on which it stands, on William Street, which I bought of Mrs. Virginia LYNCH. The house and a lot on Caroline Street near the upper end of this town(Fredsbg.) which I bought of Mrs. Jenette STRODE, together with all the money I may have on hand or in any way due me at my death, the household and kitchen furniture except my Eight day corner clock, which I give and bequeath to my son, Murray Hugh BRADSHAW, who is now a soldier in the Confederate Army, and if he should fall during this struggle for liberty, the Clock then to go to my beloved wife, during the time of her natural life, and after her death to be divided equally among my four sons, Murray Hugh, Walter Nelson, Philip Montague and Thatcher Sanders. To my son, Philip Montague, the House and lot situated and lying on Caroline Street running through to Water and Sophia Street with width equal to the front and if he should die without bodily heirs the said House and lot is to revert to his three brothers, namely, Murray Hugh, Walter Nelson and Thatcher Sanders. Likewise I make, constitute and appoint my beloved wife, Ellen B. to be Executrix of this my Last Will and Testament, hereby revoking all former wills by me made.
In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed my seal the 11th day of December in the year Our Lord, One Thousand Eight Hundred and Sixty-Two.

A writing purporting to be the last will and testament of Uriah H. BRADSHAW, dec'd., was introduced in Court for probate, and there being no subscribed witnesses thereto, Hugh S. DOGGETT and James HAYES were sworn and severally deposed that they were well acquainted with the handwriting of the Testator, and verily believe that the said writing together with the signature thereto, to be wholly in the proper handwriting of the Testator. Whereupon, the said writing is admitted to record as the true last will and testament of said Uriah H. BRADSHAW and on the motion of Ellen B. BRADSHAW, the executrix named in the said Will, who made oath thereto and together with Alexander BRADSHAW, her security entered into and acknowledged a bond in the penalty of two hundred dollars with condition according to law, Certificate is granted the said Ellen B. BRADSHAW for obtaining a probate of the said Will in due form.

Capt. U. H. Bradshaw, for many long years a well known and useful citizen of this town, died suddenly of heart disease at his residence last evening about eight o'clock. Capt. B. was a good citizen, a kind father, an excellent husband, "truly in the midst of life we are in death." I still, at this time don't know to what the Capt. refers.

THE BRADSHAW COOPER SHOP BURNED
The building on upper Main Street known as the BRADSHAW Cooper Shop took fire from a spark yesterday evening about 3 o'clock and in fifteen minutes was totally destroyed. It belonged to the BRADSHAW estate.
In the building was a lot of hay, salt and railroad scoops, all belonging to Mr. E. W. MILLS, which was also burned. The loss on building is about $500 and stock in it $250. There was no insurance on either.

Work Of The Flames
At 3 o'clock this afternoon the old one story brick cooper shop on the BRADSHAW property, situated on Pitt street, between Water and Main streets, was discovered to be on fire by Mr. James MILLS, who occupies the residence on the same lot. When first discovered only a small part of the roof was on fire, but all the woodwork about the building was soon ablaze, owing to its dry condition, and in twenty minutes the building fell in.
Mr. MILLS is convinced that the fire was caused by a spark.
Mr. E. W. MILLS had the scoops, shovels,&c., of the Northern Neck Railway stored in the building; also some hay, straw and fodder, on all which there was no insurance. His loss will reach $250. The building was uninsured also, and was valued at $200.
The Fire Department responded as soon as it could, but the fire was over when they arrived on the ground.

The book, Ancestors and Descendants of John H. BRADSHAW, etc. by J. Douglas BRADSHAW lists an article in the "Weekly Advertiser" dated April 4, 1847. I don't know if this is his mistake on the date or if the cooper shop burned yet another time. The article follows:

On Monday night at 9 1/2 o'clock, the cooper shop of U. H. BRADSHAW located in the upper end of town, was found to be on fire, and owing to the wind and the combustible materials therein, it was soon completely destroyed, together with considerable quantity of barrel timber. A very lot of timber was saved by the strenuous exertions who set themselves to work. The loss was a heavy one and there was no insurance.---

He also lists an article from the "Weekly Advertiser" dated June 20, 1847 which reads:

Capt. U. H. BRADSHAW has erected on the site of the cooper shop on the site destroyed by fire on the 30th March last, a new brick building, with sufficient dimensions to employ 15 hands or more....

On November 15, 1836, Uriah H. BRADSHAW obtained a policy from the Mutual Assurance Society in the amount of $1,000.00 for fire coverage for the following property:
" Fauquier Street South, Caroline East & Princess Ann Street West--In the town of Fredericksburg--In the county of Spotsylvania." Since his cooper shop seems never to be insured at the time of fires, I am led to believe that this insurance was on his home. There is a plat drawing of the proposed insured property included which upon the drawing of the building says "A DWELLING Wood", which also leads me to believe that this property was his home and not his business.

He was a merchant and operated a store in the Stafford Court House.

On June 8, 1888 he conveyed by Bargain and Sale Deed, 121 acres minus 1/4 acre for a graveyard, to John P. Houderscheldt; Book 3, pg. 432.
His niece's husband, John F. Curtis, was the administrator of his estate. Apparantly, after he retired he developed a close relationship with his niece, Virginia Frances and her husband and may have been living with them when he died.

His tombstone reads " He hath done what he could,"
He is buried in King George County, Virginia.

Cumberland was a trapper. He also harvested saplings and sold them to his uncle, Uriah Hugh Bradshaw who owned a cooper shop and used the wood for making barrel hoops for his flour barrels.

He was probably named after the Baptist Minister, Cumberland George, of Northern Virginia.

When Cumberland enlisted in the Confederate army his occupation was listed as carpenter. He served during the Civil War in the Stafford Light Artillery.

An Old Confederate Passed Over The River

It is with deep regret we chronicle the death of an aged citizen, Mr. Cumberland Bradshaw who passed to his reward at his home near Richardsville, Culpeper county, on Thursday, Feb. 25, 1915, aged 74 years, after an ilness of only a few days. He was stricken on Sunday morning with paralysis and never rallied from the effects. He was an old Confederate veteran and has answered to the last roll call, and gone to join his comrads who have gone before. So few of them are left behind that a few more years and all of them will be gone hence to the better land. He was wounded during the conflicts of '61 and '65 and has always preserved the bullets, the same being buried with him. He will be greatly missed by all in the community of his abode, as he posessed such a kind and generous disposition. He is survived by one daughter, of Richmond, and several brothers, also one sister.

Funeral services were conducted on Friday at 2 p.m. by Rev. J. D. Shopoff and interment in the family burying ground beside his wife, who preceeded him to the grave some years ago.

To wait the summons from on high.

Removal of Disabilities,

The disability bill which passed the House and Senate of the United States last week contains the names of over two thousand Virginians, among whom are some of the most prominent men in the State. The bill has been sent to the President for his signature, and no doubt before this has become a law. There is another bill being prepared now by the committee which embraces the names of hundreds of other Virginians, and it is the impression of gentlemen in prominent positions at Washington that it will soon be acted upon. Those who are desirous of having their political disabilities removed would do well to foreward their applications to some one of the Virginia Representatives in Congress immediately.

STABBED---We learn that Friday night Lawrence Whitehead a colored barber on Main street, was stabbed by Mr. Murray Hugh Bradshaw. We have not heard all the particulars and only state the occurance. The stab is not dangerous.

FATAL STABBING

About fifteen minutes to eight o'clock, Thursday evening last, a difficulty occurred in front of the grocery store of Wm. H. Thomas, Jr. at the upper end of Main street, brtween Murray H. Bradshaw, (white) and James Lewis, (colored) resulting in the fatal stabbing of the latter.

The facts cited seem to be as follows: Bradshaw, who is engaged in the coopering business, had formerly in his employment the colored man Lewis, whom he charged with building a fire in his shop, which he said came near burning it up, had it not been for his timely presence.

This charge the colored man denied, saying that he could prove by a Mr. Watson that he had not been at the shop that evening, and that he had not made the fire, as charged. One word followed another, when Bradshaw struck Lewis in the face; a scuffle ensued during which he (Bradshaw) drew a knife and stabbed the negro, Lewis, to the heart, killing him almost instantly. On Friday morning, at 9 o'clock, an inquest was held upon the body of the deceased, and a verdict rendered according to the testimony.

The following is the verdict of the Coroner's Jury:

Corporation of Fredericksburg, to wit:

An inquisition taken at Wm. H. Thomas', Jr., Store, in the Corporation of Fredericksburg, on the 10th day of June, 1870, before L. B. Rose, Mayor, and as such acting coroner of the said Corporation, upon the view of the body of James Lewis, (colored) there lying dead: The jurors sworn to inquire when, how and by what means the said James Lewis came to his death upon their oaths, do say that said James Lewis came to his death from two wounds in the left breast inflicted by Murray H. Bradshaw with some sharp pointed instrument, supposed to be a knife.

In testimony whereof the said Coroner and jurors hereto set their hands.

After the examination of the body, two more wounds were found, either of which was sufficient to cause death.

The jury, after holding the inquest, adjourned to the Mayor's Office to hear the testimony of the witnesses who were summoned and severly sworn. James W. Watson testified that he was sitting on the steps of the store of William H. Thomas, Jr., when he saw Murray H. Bradshaw approach James Lewis, and in rather an excited tone and manner, accused the said Lewis with making a fire in his shop, which, if he had not extinguished at the very time he did, would have burned it up. Lewis denied the charge, when Bradshaw called him a liar, and struck him in the face, and then stepped back toeard the curb-stone, when Lewis advanced one or two steps toward him, but did not strike. Heard no words pass between them; thought he saw passes between them a few moments after, as they were retreating toward the corner of the store, but did not hear the blows; saw a pistol, but no knife, in the hands of Bradshaw; they then began to scuffle , and disappeared behind the corner of the store out of view; in a few seconds the colored man, Lewis, came around the corner, approaching the witness, and putting his hands on his breast, said the damned scroundrel has cut me; commenced trembling, and sat down on the stone step at the store door and expired.

Chas. E. Bentley was examined and corroborated the statement of the witness Watson in several particulars. William H. Thomas, Jr., was in his store when he heard the noise outside, then he stepped to the door; saw the parties scuffling, but did not see weapons of any kind in the hands of either party. The balance of his testimony was the same as given by the witness Watson.

Wm. Jefferson sworn: Lives on Princess Anne street, two squares from where the stabbing took place; saw Bradshaw running by the house while he was at the window, apparantly out of breath.

William H. Thomas, Sr., was the last witness examined: He was in his son's store with his back towards the door, engaged in conversation; heard loud talking outside, and went to the door; saw the scuffle and also Bradshaw strike the negro and push him off from him; did not see weapons used; the parties disappeared behind the corner of the house, thought nothing more of it, as he had seen them before, engaged in scuffling; soon Lewis came from behind the corner, approached the store door, putting his hand to his breast, saying, as in the testimony of Watson, that he had been cut &c. Bradshaw, after seeing the effects of the stabbing, ran off up the street toward his home, making his escape before an alarm could be given, and when this was written had not been arrested. The wounds must have been inflicted whilst behind the house, and out of view of the witnesses, as none of them saw the cutting or the weapon used in doing it.

A PROCLAMATION.

Information having been received by the Executive that James Lewis (colored,) was murdered the 9th instant, in the Town of Fredericksburg, in this State, and that one MURRAY HUGH BRADSHAW, of that town, is charged with being the perpetrator of the deed, and that the person so charged has evaded arrest, fled and is now going at large; therefore I do hereby offer a Reward of ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS to any person who shall arrest the said MURRAY HUGH BRADSHAW, and deliver him into the Jail of said Town of Fredericksburg, and I do moreover require all Officers of this Commonwealth, civil and military, and request the people generally to use their best exertions to procure his arrest, that he may be brought to justice.

MURRAY HUGH BRADSHAW is 26 years of age, about 5 feet 11 inches in height, weighs 165 pounds, light, short, curly hair, light frizzly moustache, no beard; white complexion, blue eyes, and walks rapidly with a long stride.---When he left home he wore a white summer hat and gray coat.

Will of Walter Nelson Bradshaw

In the name of God amen, I Walter Nelson BRADSHAW, a resident of the State of Lousiana, but now temporarily domiciled in the State of Guatamala, Central America, being in perfect health of both body and mind yet in view of the uncertain tenure of life, do make and publish this my last will and testament hereby revoking all other wills and testaments heretofore made by me.

First: I wish all my funeral expenses paid.

Second: I wish all my legal debts and obligations discharged.

Third: The remainder of my property of every character and description both real and personal and whether held by me individually or jointly or in common with others I give absolutely and without limitations to my mother, Ellen B. BRADSHAW, who is now domiciled in Memphis, Tennessee. In the above description of property which I have in Calcasieu Parish and Nachitoches Parish in the state of Lousiana and my undivided interest in the estate of my Father, Uriah Hugh BRADSHAW, who deceased, leaving an estate in Fredericksburg in the State of Virginia and all interest which I may have or hereafter have in any Rail Road Contract - contract for building a Rail Road either individually or in partnership with others in Guatamala, Central America or elsewhere. But, I desire it distinctly understood that this description of property is not intended to limit the rights of my mother as I intend under this will she shall succeed absolutely to all my rights of property, of every nature and wherever situated at the time of my death.

Fourth: I nominate and appoint my mother, Ellen B. BRADSHAW, the Executrix of this Will, and I desire Letters Testamentary to be issued to her without requiring bond or affadavit from her. I release her from settling up my estate as such Executrix.

In Witness Whereof I have hereunto set my name at Memphis, Tennessee, the place of making this Will and where I am now sojourning, in the presence of the subscribing Witnesses this 21st of October, 1884.

Walter N. Bradshaw, a native of this place, died, on the 10th instant, at Camp San Francisco, on the Guatamala Northern railroad, Guatamala, C. A., in the 39th. year of his age. He left here soon after the war, and never returned. He was a warm-hearted and popular young man, and had numerous friends in his native town.

FORMER RESIDENT DEAD

P. M. Bradshaw Passes Away at Alexandria.

Philip M. Bradshaw, aged 70, for more than 30 years a retail boot and shoe dealer in Alexandria, and for several years, chairman of the city school board, died Friday at his home, after a brief illness. He was a native of Fredericksburg, Va., and resided here for years before moving to Alexandria. His wife, Mrs. Bettie Bradshaw, died last May. He is survived by one brother, Thatcher Bradshaw, of Bristow, Va. Besides having been a member of the school board and a trustee of the Alexandria Cooperative Building Association, Mr. Bradshaw was a past noble grand of Potomac Lodge, No. 38, I. O. O. F., and was an active member of other orders.

The name of his store was "Bradshaw's Shoe Store". As of 1973 the store still existed in Alexandria.

His only child died in infancy.

The Cahoon Jury From Fredericksburg.

Judge Guigon of Richmond, having satisfied himself that a Jury could not be found in Richmond to try Cahoon, ordered the City Sergeant to procure a tales of fifty qualified jurors from points outside and distant from Richmond--that is, tewnty-five from one locality and the same number from another. Deputy Sergeants Lee and Holzinger were accordingly sent to Lynchburg and Fredericksburg with instructions to summon the required number of talesmen from these places.

As soon as it became known yesterday morning that Deputy Sergeant Holzinger was in town "after a jury to try Cahoon" you could see men scattering and hiding, like so many mice upon an announcement that Mrs. Tabby had arrived. We hear of many ludicrous adventures and dodges. Sentinels were posted to give warning to merchants, shop-keepers, &c.--Back doors were left open for dodging out, if the "Richmond Perlice" came in at the front door. One merchant being trapped, ran upstairs, hid himself in a hogshead of old hay, &c., from which queensware had been taken, and on the retiracy of the Deputy Sergeant from his store scampered off over the river to Stafford, and probably may not have yet returned. Yesterday was also a very sick day in Fredericksburg. It was remarkable how many people had sudden attacks, or members of whose families were taken sick, rendering the absence of the heads of the house out of the question. A great many people too, suddenly became impressed with the fact that they had made up their minds, had expressed an opinion, and were theretofore, incompetent jurymen.

The following named gentlemen (29 in all) were summoned and taken to Richmond by Sergeant Holzinger, in the last night's train:

CAUGHT.--Out of the thirty citizens of this place carried to Richmond to serve on the Cahoon trial all returned with the exception of five, who were thought to be competent, and were accordingly invited to "take a seat". The following gentlemen compose our quota: P. M. Bradshaw, Charles Miller, W. C. Littrell, W. H. Smith, and James G. Read. We have no doubt but what these gentlemen will hugely enjoy the Fourth. Last Saturday was consumed with the examination of one witness.
